I’m a mom to a curious, energetic 5-year-old boy, and like many parents, I’ve spent countless hours searching for products that actually live up to their promises. Over time, I realized how overwhelming that search can be so I started this blog to help other parents cut through the noise. While I don’t personally use every product I mention, I take my research seriously. Each recommendation is the result of extensive comparison, expert insights, parent reviews, and careful consideration of safety, quality, and practicality. Whether it’s baby gear, toddler tools, or preschool picks, I share what I would genuinely consider for my own family and why. My goal is to save you time, reduce decision fatigue, and offer thoughtful, honest content that supports your parenting journey. If I can help you feel more confident about the choices you make for your child, then this space is doing exactly what it was meant to do.

Best bedtime books for toddlers? The Goodnight Train uses soothing rhythm and dreamy art to make winding down feel magical.

Let me take you back to 2021, when my son wasn’t even two yet and bedtime was still a bit of a rollercoaster.

One night, I introduced him to The Goodnight Train by June Sobel and let me tell you, it was love at first choo choo. From that moment on, it became our nightly go-to. I was reading it so often I could probably recite it in my sleep (and honestly, I probably did a few times).

This book isn’t just a story, it’s a magical, musical ride to dreamland. The rhyming cadence flows like a lullaby, the train sounds add playful energy, and the illustrations by Laura Huliska-Beith are absolutely stunning. And I mean, really stunning – filled with whimsical details you won’t catch the first time. Like a squirrel snacking from a fridge in a tree or a sheep knitting a blanket from another sheep’s wool (I still chuckle every time). It’s clever, fun, and has that perfect bedtime rhythm that makes winding down feel like an adventure.

One of the reasons The Goodnight Train works so well as a bedtime story is the rhythm of the writing. The gentle rhyming and “clickety-clack” train sounds almost feel soothing enough to lull kids to sleep while you read. The story slowly winds down as the train travels through dreamy nighttime scenes, which helps create a calm transition before bed.

The illustrations also add to the cozy bedtime feeling. The soft nighttime colors, sleepy characters, and imaginative dreamlike scenes make the book feel peaceful instead of overstimulating. It has just enough fun details to keep toddlers interested without making bedtime feel energetic or chaotic.

What I personally like about this book is that it feels calming for both kids and parents. Some bedtime books can be long or overly silly right before sleep, but this one naturally slows everything down. The repetitive sounds and predictable rhythm help create that comforting bedtime routine toddlers thrive on.

It’s especially perfect for little ones who love trains, like my son Noah, because it combines something exciting with a soothing bedtime atmosphere. Instead of hyping kids up, the train slowly settles in for the night, making it easier for children to mentally transition toward sleep.

Another reason bedtime books like this are so helpful is because repetition and calming routines can become strong sleep cues for toddlers. Reading the same relaxing story every night often helps children associate books with winding down and feeling safe before sleep.

Parents also seem to genuinely love this one because it’s short enough for busy evenings but still memorable and fun to read aloud. Many families mention that it became part of their regular bedtime rotation because kids ask for it over and over again.

Because my son adored it so much (he’d light up the second I said “choo choo!”), I started collecting more of June Sobel’s books and I’m so glad I did. She has a whole “Goodnight Train” collection that covers holidays like Christmas, Halloween, Easter, and Valentine’s Day, plus a few sequels like The Goodnight Train Rolls On. Every single one is just as charming and soothing as the original. This whole series is a must-have for toddlers, especially those obsessed with trains, bedtime routines, or snuggly storytelling moments.

If you’re looking for a gift that parents will thank you for or just want to make bedtime a little more magical, The Goodnight Train is your ticket. Hop on and don’t be surprised if you end up loving the ride just as much as your kid does.
