Planning party favors for kids might seem like a small detail, but if you’ve ever done it, you know it’s a whole thing.
First, there’s the hunt – scrolling, comparing, second-guessing, trying to find things that aren’t total junk. Then comes the packing. What feels like it should take ten minutes somehow eats up your whole evening.
Let me be honest, part of the reason I care so much about what goes into party favor bags is because of what comes home in them. When my son walks in the door after a school birthday party, he’s almost always holding a brightly colored bag filled with, you guessed it, plastic trinkets and candy that glows like it came from a science lab. It’s eye-catching, sure. But it’s also often junk. The toys break within minutes, and the candy? Half the time I can’t pronounce the ingredients. So we sit down together and go through it. We talk about what’s worth keeping, what’s safe to eat, and what we’re just going to toss. And you know what? We usually throw away most of it.
It doesn’t feel great, neither as a mom, nor as someone who knows another mom spent time and money putting it together. That’s what really shifted my thinking. When we’re the ones making party favor bags, we’re choosing what another child will bring into their home, and sometimes even into their body. That’s a big responsibility. I’m not saying it has to be perfect, but if we can skip the sugar overload and throwaway plastic in favor of simple, useful toys or healthy treats, I think that’s a party favor win for everyone.
So what should go in a party favor bag? Personally, I lean toward fewer sugary treats and more thoughtful, lasting items, like small toys, activity books, or even mini puzzles kids will actually want to use. It doesn’t have to be fancy, just something that doesn’t scream “dollar store impulse bin.” If you still want to include snacks (and I usually do), there are plenty of healthier options out there which are fun, colorful, and still kid-approved. Think fruit leather instead of hard candy, or snack-size trail mix over mystery-colored lollipops. If you’re looking for ideas, I’ve already rounded up some of our favorite no-added-sugar options in this post and this one too. In this post, I’m sharing some of our favorite party favor picks—simple, useful, and not destined for the trash. And yes, I’ll link every product so you can skip the search spiral and get straight to packing.

At the end of the day, party favors don’t need to be elaborate or expensive – they just need to feel intentional. A small, well-chosen item can bring a lot more joy (and a lot less guilt) than a bag full of throwaways and sugar crashes. Whether it’s a mini book, a reusable toy, or a healthy snack that won’t make other parents cringe, your favor bag can be one of the things kids remember and parents actually appreciate. Keep it simple, keep it thoughtful, and trust that less really can be more.
